Building Your Charitable Plan, Brick by Brick

Most of us have a "someday" list. You know the one, it’s tucked away in the back of your mind, filled with tasks that are important but never quite urgent enough to jump to the top of today’s to-do list. Organize the thousands of photos on your phone. Finally update the estate plan. Host that big family meeting to discuss the future. Reboot the exercise routine.
For many of the generous neighbors we meet here at Kitsap Community Foundation, charitable planning often falls into that same "someday" category.
We hear from so many people across Kitsap who care deeply about our local parks, our students, and our vulnerable neighbors. They fully intend to "do more" with their philanthropy. But life is loud. The calendar fills up with work and family commitments. Markets fluctuate, making the "right time" feel elusive. Business priorities shift. In the middle of all that noise, it can feel easier to wait for the perfect moment, a time when things feel calmer, clearer, or more certain.
If that sounds like you, please know that you are not alone. This pause isn’t a sign of indifference. In fact, it’s usually the opposite. It reflects a deep desire to get it right. You might be asking yourself:
Am I giving to the right organizations to actually make a difference?
Am I committing too much capital too soon?
What if my priorities change five years from now?
How do I involve my children or grandchildren in these decisions later on?
When every philanthropic decision feels permanent, it’s natural to hesitate. But at KCF, we believe that philanthropy shouldn’t be a source of stress. We are here to help you shift gears from "intention" to "action." Here are the three principles that guide our work with donors to help them build a legacy, one brick at a time.
Take it One Step at a Time
One of the most helpful mental shifts we can offer is this: think of charitable planning as a multi-step process rather than a single, all-or-nothing decision. You don't have to have every answer today to start making an impact.
In many cases, a tax planning need takes precedence. Maybe you’ve had a high-income year, sold a business, or need to manage a required minimum distribution. Our team understands that deadlines are real! That’s why we often help donors establish a donor- advised fund (DAF) first to meet an immediate tax planning need.
By setting up a donor-advised fund, you secure your tax deduction in the current year, but you don't have to decide which specific charities will receive grants right away. Think of the DAF as your personal "charitable checkbook" or a dedicated savings account for the community. With that time-sensitive box checked, the pressure is off. We can then move on to the heart of the matter: discussing how you’d like to deploy those resources over time, involving your family in the process, and adjusting your giving as you learn more about Kitsap’s evolving needs.
Keep it Simple: Overcoming Decision Fatigue
Sometimes the hardest part of giving isn't the act of generosity itself: it’s the decision fatigue that comes with it. With so many incredible nonprofits doing work in our region, "Where should I give?" can feel like an overwhelming question.
Often, that’s not actually the best question to ask right out of the gate. When we sit down with donors, we like to work through a few "threshold questions" first to find the patterns in your passion:
As you look back on your life, what causes have consistently moved you?
What specific charities have you supported for years, even in small ways?
Why did you choose those organizations? Was it a personal connection, a success story, or a specific local need?
Is there a gap in your current giving that you’d like to fill?
As we explore these questions together, our team at KCF acts as your local research arm. We can provide deep-dive insights into local nonprofits, share data on community needs: from housing to the arts: and even facilitate family conversations to help bridge the gap between generations. We’ve found that when you focus on the "why" first, the "where" usually becomes crystal clear.
Adopt Long-Term Thinking: The Power of the Pivot
Community change does not happen overnight. The challenges we face in the Kitsap region require sustained, long-term support. While annual giving is the "bread and butter" of most nonprofits, you might find that your intentions go deeper. You might want to ensure that a specific cause is supported for decades to come, long after you’re gone.
At KCF, we help families structure various types of funds to meet these long-term goals:
Field-of-Interest Funds: You choose a cause (like "early childhood education" or "Kitsap environmental conservation"), and we ensure grants go to the most effective organizations in that space as they change over time.
Designated Funds: You pick specific organizations to receive an annual check in perpetuity.
Unrestricted Funds: You trust KCF’s expertise to address the most pressing, emerging needs of the county, whatever they may be in the year 2050 or 2100.
Building Your Legacy Through Estate Planning
A crucial "brick" in any charitable plan is your estate plan. We know this can be one of the most daunting tasks on the "someday" list. To make it easier for our community, KCF has partnered with FreeWill.
You can visit FreeWill.com/kitsapfoundation to create or update your will for free. It’s a simple, secure way to protect your loved ones and, if you choose, include a legacy gift for the causes you care about most. Whether it’s naming your donor-advised fund as a beneficiary of your IRA or leaving a percentage of your estate to an unrestricted fund, these "future bricks" ensure that your commitment to Kitsap remains strong for generations. We Are Your Partner in Philanthropy
The bottom line is that Kitsap Community Foundation is here for you along your entire journey. Philanthropy isn't just for the ultra-wealthy or the "someday" version of yourself. It is for everyone who wants to see our community thrive.
We’ll work together to build and implement your plan, involving your tax advisors and family members at every key juncture. We promise to ensure that your charitable intentions: even as they evolve over time: are fulfilled with integrity and heart.
