2010 Celebration of Philanthropy Honors Dr. John Stanley, Port Madison Enterprises, and David Frederick
Annual Event is an Opportunity to Salute Outstanding Volunteerism and Giving in Our Community!
A celebration of local philanthropy will take place on Thursday, May 20, 2010 when the Kitsap Community Foundation (KCF) recognizes individuals and organizations who have exceeded the accepted bounds of generosity. The Celebration will both bestow honors on specific recipients and pay tribute to the spirit that compels people to donate their time and financial resources.
This year's Outstanding Citizen Award recipient is David Frederick, Co-founder of Hope in Christ Ministries located in Bremerton. While serving as a pastor, volunteering as a police chaplain and doing foster care in Bremerton in the 1990s, Dave and Cindy Frederick began to see a part of Bremerton they had never really noticed before…Drug abuse, Homelessness. Gang-activity and violence. They came face to face with youth whose lives were a spiraling plummet toward lifelong incarceration, addiction or death. They had to do something.
They began Hope in Christ Ministries, a 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation, as a first step toward making a difference in the lives of hurting youth.
What began as Teen Night has expanded the ministry to include: Oasis Center, Street Hope, The Refuge, Bible studies, mentoring, job-training, jail visitation, provision of temporary housing, pastoral counseling, helping with community service, a clothing and food bank, tutoring, and special outings such as hiking or camping.
The recipient of the Organization Making a Difference Award is Port Madison Enterprises (PME), the business arm of the Suquamish Tribe. In addition to supporting essential education, social and health services for its members, the Suquamish Tribe provides funding for a number of non-profit organizations that improve the lives of individuals throughout the community. In 2008, PME provided funding to over 146 local organizations or community related events with financial support totaling more than $530,000, such as, Relay for Life, Toys for Tots, Fireworks on the Fjord, Whaling Days, Duck Race, and the North Kitsap Community Pool to name a few.
Receiving this year's Hannah Langer Spirit of Philanthropy Award is Dr. John Stanley, who understands what it means to give of one's time, talent and financial support. This has been the trademark of Dr. Stanley for more than 50 years. Going beyond his medical practice at Doctors Clinic, he has dedicated his human and financial capital to the YMCA, and its mission. Stanley has held many leadership positions, Board Chair, Membership Drive Chair, and Major Gifts Campaign Chair, to name a few, resulting in increased revenues, expanded programs, and the creation and implementation of the YMCA Foundation. He has demonstrated what it means to give of one's self, and for that the Kitsap Community Foundation is proud to present this prestigious award to him.
The 2010 Celebration of Philanthropy will be held during the evening of Thursday, May 20th at the Conference Center at Bremerton's Harborside. For ticket information, please contact Pete Atha at 698.3622.
